Use of Story Workshop Methods
in Teaching Drawing and Painting

Master Teacher Betty Shiflett has developed a Drawing and Painting class using Story Workshop approaches as a way of helping students draw upon and focus their imaginations toward drawing and painting. Betty Shiflett's Story Workshop Drawing and Painting class helps students solve many of the problems they have in seeing and developing imaginative content and helps them focus and organize imagery within the frame of a drawing or painting. Combining Story Workshop, Nikolaiders drawing, and other exercises, Shiflett uses Story Workshop exercises to develop a strong, imaginative experience of story and imagery, which students then bring into drawing and painting, seeing and developing lively, meaningful imagery. Shiflett has assembled a library of fresh and engaging slides of student drawings and paintings in pencil, chalk, pastel, and other media.
